My car finally reached 50,400 miles and then the codes came.
Symptoms: very rough low idle and nearly on the verge of shutting off. The first code came with P1101 and then I assumed that maybe it was the mass air flow sensor. So, I took it out and inspected it. I didn't see anything wrong. So, just in case if disconnecting with the engine running could have caused an issue, I disconnected the battery for 5 minutes. I started up the engine and then I saw 3 codes: P1101 P2227 P2228
On top of that, I had one other symptom that was unrelated. A high pitched squeaking noise coming from the belt area and I thought it was a bad pulley bearing.
I decided to take it to my local mechanic and leave it there while I went away on a vacation. He found 2 things that went bad.
1: the coil pack went bad and that was the cause of the codes and rough idle.
2. the valve cover went bad, which caused the squeaking noises near the belt. Maybe oil was leaking out. My mechanic said that GM knows about the bad valve cover problems that people are having, although there is no recall.
None of the repairs were covered under warranty and it cost $290 for the job.
So far I've had all these things fail on the car since I ordered directly from the factory:
Master Cylinder
Clutch
Transmission
TCM
Water Pump
Coil Pack
Valve Cover
What's next to fail?
I'm not hard on the car and always trying to maintain 40 mpg when possible.
I honestly thought it was a good reliable car to buy when I read outstanding reviews back in 2013. In order to own this car, I need a backup car on the side for when the parts break.
I just thought I'd share this event with the forum in case if someone else comes across these codes and is trying to troubleshoot their symptoms.
