Today my check engine light came on for the first time in my 2013 Sonic (about 63k miles, 1.8 liter engine, 5 speed manual transmission). I pulled the code and it was P0171 - lean condition. This means there is a vacuum leak and air intake leak somewhere. i knew about some complaints about the throttle body air intake hose (from the air cleaner to throttle body). This hose is among first things I checked and sure enough the hose was almost separated in two on top. This was not something that was visible when popping the hood though. I had to place my hands on the hose and physically check it before I saw the split in the hose. I taped up the hose with tape to seal it before I can get a new hose and install it. I wonder if local dealers carry that one in stock.
This is a real problem with these engines. The hose is way too thin and eventually splits. An overly lean condition will also demonstrate itself as loss in power.
