2012 1.8 running cool at around 140 degrees

2012 1.8 Sonic with 75,000 miles.

I had a scanner on it today on the way to work. It got up to 145 degrees sitting at idle. On the freeway down to about 135 degrees. No engine codes. No coolant loss. Should run around 200-215, right?

Sounds like a thermostat to me, but I've never diagnosed a car with an electronic thermostat.

The thermostat for this bugger is spendy, so I don't want to throw parts at it. Anyone have experience with this?

It's a thermostat issue. Mine did the same thing. Quick fix. Amazon sells them for about $30-40

Buy one of these which are half or ALL metal and never worry about it again.

Another owner here just bought one and they fit just fine. There is another source on Amazon as well for about $10 more if this one is out of stock. They sell a lot appartently.

Thanks for the help.

I actually bought just the thermostat on Amazon for $27. That was a mistake. While removing the old thermostat, I broke one of the bolts. Seems that Chevy didn't bother with stainless bolts, and they rusted. Can't drill out the bolt, because it is screwed into a sleeve in the plastic housing, and you end up destroying the housing.

Since I have to have a car for work, I had to go to my local auto parts store and buy the housing/thermostat for $135. Should have bought the housing in the first place.

At least I now have heat again. Good thing because it's 14 below zero tonight.
