Please don't bash me, it's a legitimate concern, and if I can learn a few things that would be nice.
So I've changed the oil in all my cars, never had any problems, but my 1.8L is a total mystery to me.
Let me start off with how I change my oil, so someone can diagnosis the situation for me.
I usually take the vehicle for a ride about 20 minutes or so to warm up the oil. The vehicle is placed on ramps, front wheels on ramp , rear wheels on the ground.Let the car sit from anywhere 1hr to 1.5 hrs( the point where the oil is warm, not hot to the touch.) I then remove the oil pan plug and take off the top filler cap. Once there's no/ very little oil coming out of the bottom plug I remove the filter. New filter and gasket go on(gasket gets some new oil placed on it), bottom plug closed, fill the vehicle to approximately 3.5L then check on the dipstick. Let it settle for a bit. Recheck, once it's above minumum oil level I turn vehicle on drive down the ramp. Shut off the car and let it sit for 20 minutes or so, recheck dip stick and add oil and recheck every few minutes the level until about 3/4's level and then let it settle for a few hours recheck to see where final level is at, if I need more i add if not then I let it be.
This is the PROBLEM, first oil change I did the vehicle showed just below the max marking on dispstick, left overnight, next morning checked it, level was WAY overfilled, I freaked out and drained some out.
Next oil change, I decided that once it shows min on the dipstick I would let it settle overnight(which I did) and fill in the morning. I check in the morning it's OVERFILLED AGAIN!
So 3rd oil change which I did yesterday, I bought the individual 1L cartons put in 4 L's out of the 4.4L capacity and looked on the dipstick, showed half way. I let the vehicle sit for SIX HOURS rechecked showed the same level. I did a few errands later, car sat overnight, recheck the level and OVERFILLED AGAIN, what the hell is going on. I'm not talking little overfilled i'm talking the oil covers a quarter of the dipstick overfilled.
Any ideas? Am I supposed to check the vehicle when it's warm?
