Is it possible to retrofit dXr HID bulbs?

I'd like some HID bulbs for my lights and don't want to fork out the several hundred dollars for a projector retrofit. I am NOT going to put projector-style bulbs in my reflector housings. Is it possible to somehow convert from our harnesses to a D1R, D2R, etc. style bulb, and if so, how?

I don't have an answer for you, but thank you for not being on of 'those' that put put HID drop-ins into standard halogen housing. Glad to know that some folks care about how their lights actually perform for them, for others AND about looks vs. just looks.

Ahtoxa...that's exactly what thebook's plan is: Put HID bulbs in reflector housings. Doesn't matter what base the bulb has...it's still a HID bulb "drop in."

I don't see the reason to try to use a D1R/D2R bulb and have to make it fit somehow vs. getting a HID version of the Sonic factory bulb. My retro uses H1...I don't even remember what factory is. There would be nothing to secure a D1R/D2R or any other based bulb besides what the headlight calls for. The grooves in the bulb holder wouldn't match up. Regardless of the bulb it's all the same lighting result (a mess) unless you get projectors (which you aren't doing).

The way I understood it is that the bulb styles with "R" at the end were designed for reflector housings, and would actually give me a decent cutoff. If they won't, then I'll just get better halogen bulbs and deal with it.

That may be the case, but most likely for reflectors that were designed for HID. The bulb doesn't provide the cutoff, it's the shape of the reflector bowl (or projector lens/shield) and notches inside.

Okay, now I understand. I thought it was the actual bulb that gave the cutoff; I didn't realize that the housings were different. Looks like that's my question answered then. Thanks, I learned something new today.

No worries. I just wish Sonics had projectors (HID or Halogen) from the factory. Coming in 2015 I think...
