Lost our Sonic :(

So, after owning my 1.8 Sonic 2LT for 5 months someone decided to crash into it while we were in bed. :sadbanana:

It of course woke up the whole neighborhood. The car was hit hard enough it slid into a tree and then somehow ended up 50 feet on the other side of the road up on the sidewalk. The midsize Mitsubishi that ran into our Sonic ended up with significantly more damage.

We won't hear back from our insurance for a few days so I still have no idea if its totaled or repairable. Opinions?

IF the Sonic ends up being totaled we are looking at a 1.4T with 6 speed manual. My main concern being how the wife will tolerate it on our 110 mile a day commute.

good thing the airbags didn't deploy, but that is a lot of damage. it depends on what is damaged under the hood, if the frame is bent, and what your car is valued at. It might not be totaled, but that is a lot of damage.

Not sure if any of the people in the other car were hurt. As slitzell said yea, our 5 year old. :blankface:

I was really surprised when the wife unlocked the drivers side door and opened it to get our stuff out. Though the door didn't open fully or work perfect the fact it even opened was amazing.

The officer who wrote out the report told us in his opinion it was totaled though I guess we won't know anything for sure for a few days.

Glad no was hurt! I know how it feels to loose a love one My '12 X5M was stolen after 9 days.

Eh, in general, officers don't know what they're talking about. The officer told my wife her mustang was definitely totaled, don't even be optimistic, but it's currently at the shop getting its insides put back together.

That being said, what are the current feelings on the 1.4T vs the 1.8? Is the 1.4T clearly a better engine overall or are there some benefits to the 1.8?

The benefit, note singular, to the 1.8 is that it's cheaper.

I hope you get the Sonic you want.

Looks like two in New Jersey just these past few weeks. Maybe just some bad juju.

The turbo is well worth the extra money. Timing chain instead of belt, better MPG (these things pay for themselves) and noticeably better low end torque. Turbo lag is noticeable, but you adapt quickly.

Ouch, and I thought mine smoking was bad.

Hearing that it your Sonic was totaled makes me a little happy, it would never be the same. My neighbors new less than a year old Jeep Wrangler JK should have been totaled, but because it was so new the value of the Jeep was higher and the Jeep was fixed. My neighbor said its not the same.
I bent the frame in my first TJ, had that fixed because I loved that Jeep. I could never get it aligned and the TJ always pulled to the right. I kept it a few years and when I found my current Jeep I was sick of the pulling and thrilled to see it go.

It must stink seeing a car you liked so much that damaged, but think of upgrading, or maybe you want blue instead of white. You will also get a new car faster than it will to get that one fixed.
