My goal was to spend as little as possible and still have a MUCH better sounding system. Last year I started off by adding a Planet Audio AC1800.5 amplifier connected to the factory speakers and a Kicker 10C104 Comp 10-Inch Subwoofer. I built my own box and install looked like this...
Sound was okay, but could be better and subwoofer had a high center of gravity so it wanted to tip a lot. I later rebuilt the box in a downward firing design and so it would not move around...
Almost a year later I have finally gotten around to replacing the stock speakers. Keeping price in mind, I looked for some decent component speakers. I ended up going with 2 pairs of Crunch CS65C's. While there was only one review at 3 stars on this, I did find other places online that were favorable. I ordered them through Amazon but was surprised to find they were considered to be "hazardous material" and took a week to be delivered. Stupid error that I am sure Amazon will never fix but I already have them so I don't care.
I know that they make adapter rings for the speakers, but they make the speaker sit deeper into the doors. Two problems with that is that the front of the speaker then does not meet with the door panel AND I was not sure how close the magnets would come to the glass when the windows went down. So I modified (destroyed) the stock speakers and used the ring on those...
I mounted the front tweeters in the little pod next to the mirror...
Even though I RARELY have anyone in the back seat, I mounted the other set of tweeters in the back doors. I chose to go a bit lower on those so they would not be really close to my ear...
Bonus aftermath pic...
Overall cost ended up being $244.64
