2013 Sonic LT sedan, 1.8 engine,5 speed manual transmission:
My average MPG (about 60% city, 40% highway driving) is about 36 MPG. This with A/C on all the time, and using regular unleaded E10. I know how to get good mileage out of a manual transmission car. The key is to avoid jackrabbit start and accelerate at a moderate pace. The manual transmission is geared high and takes some getting used to. I had a 1992 Mazda Protégé and 1999 Mazda 626 V6, both with manual transmissions and the gearing was very aggressive compared to this Sonic. Performance was much better, but gas mileage was also much worse (27 MPG average for Protégé LX and 25 MPG average for 626 V6, and I used mid grade gas in Protégé and premium in 626). Sonic is clearly geared to be an economy car, not a performance car. Both Mazdas would run around this Sonic in circles in terms of acceleration and overall high speed response. But high manual transmission gearing in this Sonic saves a lot of fuel. I do not drive slow, usually around 75-80 MPH on an interstate and I use cruise control a lot. Once the car is at cruising speed, fuel economy is quite good. I can get close to 40 MPG cruising at 75 MPH, depending on brand of gas. Yes, this car gets different mileage with different gas brands.
