I have on more than one occasion seen the code 82 pop up. It never shut my car down. It doesn't make any sense at all that it would, and if it did I'm pretty sure other people would have reported it by now, it's not at all uncommon for oil change folks to neglect this reset, particularly if they aren't Chevy Dealerships. The only thing the oil life sensor is designed to do is to get you to go in for a change.
This would be like having the "turn signal has been on for a long time, are you sure you don't want to turn that off" beeper shut your steering down.
"Mysterious shutdown" is a serious problem, don't get me wrong, but usually there's a logical cause, or else there's no cause at all, it happens once and never again, and since no mechanic can ever see it, it's very hard to pin down what happened.
BUT it also doesn't leave you with "no steering and no brake". I caused that problem once by pinching an ultragauge wire with my steering wheel column (I thought I'd found a neat place to hide the wire) and I lost -power- steering and -power- brakes. The car only weighs 3000 lbs loaded, it's not exactly crippling to steer and brake manually.
