Gimpster,

That's a lot of vehicles! How many do you have right now, licensed and insured?
I have 6 licensed and insured, including 1 motorcycle for just the two of us, and need to reduce the fleet at some point. Insurance is devastating.

Also your opinion of the 2016 GTI? Is it worth the price of 2 Sonic's?

Currently licensing 4 cars, and 1 motor cycle. I only have 3 insured though, one of those being my kids Civic. I dropped the Miata and the wifes Beetle since they are under covers for the season.

So I disliked that MK7 GTI so much that I got rid of it in 5 months. I got really lucky and was able to bail out of it for exactly what I owed. I bought it as kind of an impulse in December 2015 when dieselgate was going on still. My daily driver at that time was a '08 Cobalt SS/TC that I had worn out, but it was still pretty quick.

Keep in mind my GTI was a base model, no options other than bi-xenon lighting. It was a manual transmission.

I found the GTI to be lacking in power, and my car had a ton of interior rattles and fit issues VW couldn't resolve. The infotainment system was also buggy as heck, perhaps thats been resolved now with updates. I added a JB1 piggyback to it, and that brought the car up to "acceptable power". VW also engineered like ALL of the feels out of the car IMO. To the point where they put a fake engine noise speaker up in the cowl, which I realize is not new to VW's.... but I was like what is this?!

IMO, if you're going to get a GTI/Golf, get an R model. If I had bought an R, I'm pretty sure I'd still be in it today. Those things are 11 second cars with basically only a tune...

Sorry for the ramble.

Not what I expected to hear about the GTI; The R is nice except pricey. I think I'll just keep the GTO a while longer.

As you can see I am very brand un-loyal, so I feel like I'm able to dole out criticism where its due. The bottom line to me is your original question: is the GTI worth 2x a Sonic? And I think its a resounding NO, and the cult of personality built up around the GTI is unwarranted IMHO. Especially if the purpose of the car is to just daily drive like I do.

My Sonic with a tune and some small boltons is a much more fun "feels" car than my MK7 was.
