While we were working on the intake manifold we also had a bit of time to work on our cold air intake for the 1.4L. We have always had great results from air boxes on vehicles and the sonic is no exception. We were hoping to stuff a 4" velocity stack in the area we had to work with but it would not clear the hood. So we opted for the 3" velocity stack that provides a full tapered bell mouth of 4.5". We used the OEM panel filter to calculate the frontal area and then chose a slightly larger panel filter that turned out to be a good fit for this application. The velocity stack and filter are enclosed in our air box frame and sheet metal air box. The air box frame utilizes the OEM mounting locations with a set of CNC machined mounting tabs we cut.
All in all the project turned out pretty well and we are quite happy with the results from an air intake. Questions and comments welcome, dyno graphs below and a few pics. Dyno testing is using a completely stock Sonic RS, and only changing the air intake system. No modifications to the ECU.
