I've noticed on various threads that there are Trackbacks, and they are already pinged for that thread. Some seem harmless, others, not so much. Like porn sites.
I think when you get spammers who post, or have posted in the past, or people with malware, these trackbacks are filled in and stick with particular threads. Seems even cleaning up the spammers leaves the trackbacks in place.
Might want to check it out. Here's how to try it out.
Go to some threads, with a few replies. Hit the quote button. Look before you actually submit and you will see Trackbacks already filled in.
For instance, when I go to the "http://www.sonicownersforum.com/forum/general-discussion/5479-what-did-you-do-your-sonic-today.html" Thread, and "Quote" anyone, I get an automatic trackback to;
somewherearound[dot].com
I don't know if that's safe or not, but on OTHER threads, I won't even finish the reply due to the not-so-nice trackbacks associated with those threads.
I wonder if others see them. And if they do, that's why they don't actually complete posts. This is either flagging posts of interest, that may contain data for mining, or it may just be a way to have their sites links spread around.
I have a feeling spammers come, post, add them to a thread, and then disappear, but the trackback gets left as long as the thread exists.
There's enough info on people here that I could probably figure out who some of the posters actually are and other details. I don't think we should be sharing that with outsiders and OTHER sites.
Maybe I'm wrong, and it's me with the virus/malware, but I highly doubt it.
I just think the site would be a LOT safer if things like Trackbacks were disabled.
I could have simply added a trackback now, and sent it back to this site itself...
I've stopped "Quoting" people if I see any links in trackbacks. Sort of hurts our ability to help others here.
