My little 1.8L did have a top end issue with the cam sensor and an electric thermostat issue (interesting enough both in the same harness so possible short I was thinking), however I not going to lie, I didn't exactly go easy on it, and it still with both those issues, so never really got me stranded anywhere:

I feel like I can get well over 100K out of it as long as I keep maintenance up, and it from whats under the hood, theres not a whole lot to break. Scheduled Maintenance, follow it.
