Hello Everyone!
I have a 2012 Chevy Sonic LT that I just bought used 4 days ago.
It is a one owner vehicle and the person who owned it before me installed an aftermarket cruise control. I noticed this from the beginning considering there was something plugged into the place where you would check for check engine light codes.
Anyway, the issue I am having started when me and my wife were driving from Terre Haute, IN to Chicago, IL. The first couple of times it happened I wasn't quite sure what was causing it. The check engine light, traction control light and reduced engine power light all came on at the same time and there was an obvious decrease in power. This happened twice while using cruise control. I was able to reset the lights (other than the check engine light) by turning the car off for 10 seconds and back on.
I had the check engine codes read and I don't have them on me right now. But they had something to do with a sensor that was related to acceleration and how it was reading 2 different speeds or something like that.
On the way back from Chicago and earlier this morning I was able to pin point exactly when this happens and it is when the cruise control is engaged and the air conditioner or defrost is on with the fans at 2 or 3 and maybe even at 1. I was able to reproduce this result 3 times. Engage cruise control turn up fans, and turn on defrost and boom the lights come on.
My original theory was that it could be an issue with the after market cruise control, perhaps it was wired or installed wrong. The dealer after having it all day thinks that it is for sure the cruise control causing the issue and wants to remove it. They think that because the vehicle didn't originally come with it that it is not designed to have it and that is why there is an issue. But their theory doesn't make any sense to me because you can buy this same model with a luxury package that includes Cruise Control, Bluetooth, Etc. I think that there could be a much deeper issue to what is cause this issue. Like the car is not producing enough power to adequately run all of these things at the same time.
So what do you think could be causing this? What could I suggest the dealership to test or look for?
They are working on my car for free as of right now because they told me the car had no issues when I bought it. And I have a friend who works there.
Thanks for any help!
