Air Conditioning question

I have looked everywhere in the forum and cannot find anyone who has asked this question already so here goes...
My 2015 Sonic has a problem in the afternoons with the A/C. It only blows hot air, even when the compressor is engaged. I hooked my gages up and found the system is NOT low refrigerant, the condenser fans runs, blower fan is on high, temp set to full cold, Max button is in (or out doesn't matter), but air out the ducts is hot. I noticed the high side pressure slowly begins to drop from about 225 to about 150 and the low stays at about 34 the whole time. This only happens in the afternoon when its around 90 out. In the morning the A/C is super cold. Outside temp is about 70.

What would cause the high side to drop and not the low side, and could there be a blend door or sensor going bad that is causing this?

Are you sure compressor is on the entire time? My old 1992 Sundance had a similar issue. The air was super cold when the compressor was on but for some reason the compressor wouldn't stay engaged long enough to cool off the cabin.

Yes, I watched the coil engage and remain in the whole time I was working on it. I almost expected the compressor to be short-cycling due to low gas, but it ran continuously. Also, I couldn't add any 134A. The system was "happy".

Have you changed the cabin air filter at all, or recently? If not the filter may be causing a lack of proper air flow across the evaporator coil.

Filter was clean. I found out that the piercing valve on my gage set was malfunctioning so it would not let the refrigerant out into the yellow line. So when I tried to add gas, it seemed like the system would not take any, giving me the impression the system was full. it wasn't until later that I realized no gas could be let out of the can. I bought another piercing valve and added a full can in less than 2 minutes! So needless to say I have a small leak somewhere. A/C is blowing nice and cold. She's as cold as my first wife now and its a good thing because it will be 100deg by Sunday here!

hey guys searched around the forum and couldn't see anything that was similar to to what i was asking until i saw this post. My 2012 1.8 blows nice cold air when the car is moving but blows completely hot air when stopped and sometime the car starts to overheat if im sitting in traffic with the ac on. Can anyone chime in to whats going on?

Check to see if your radiator fan is working when you turn the ac on full blast.

it was the radiator fan. Thanks! Specifically the med. sized 40 amp fuse was blown.

I also have an air conditioning question. I have a leak in the condenser and do I realy need to take the bumper off or can I slide it out the top?

Hi,
Yes the front bumper cover has to come off. But trust me, it really is as easy as everyone says. I just did my radiator last night. I started at about 2:00pm and was doing the test drive by 6:00! And I took my time too. Anyway, the condenser sits outside of the engine compartment in front of the radiator. 2 little screws hold it to the radiator and you can easily reach the manifold bolt from the passenger side with the bumper cover removed.

Sweet, I'm going to try and get this done as soon as the parts come in. I'm probably going to do the radiator too. It's hard to tell if I have a leak in that too but might as well be ready for it while I'm in there.
