Another Sonic stuck in Park

2012 Sonic 56 thousand miles my son left his sonic at the short term parking lot at airport I went to get it and the button is stuck and won't release I saw a video on how to repair the button my question is after I take the knob apart is There any way to shift the trans so I can drive it home until I can get the part to fix it. Thanks for any help

I don't know for sure about the Sonic, but a lot of automatics have a plunger on top of the shifter rod that the button just presses. If that's the case, you should be able to take the handle off and just press that until you can get a new shift handle. After looking at some pictures and diagrams, I'm like 90% sure this will work on the Sonic. I would check for you, but mine is manual.

Thanks for the reply hopefully that is the case I would hate to have to pay for a tow if it could even be towed in park.

We got the shift button to pop out today my son stuck a small plastic card behind the top of the button was able to shift to reverse back up went to shift to drive button stuck again out came the card got it to shift to drive and get it home.

I called the chevy dealer today with the part # 95393161 the parts guy said that was not a good # so I told him what I needed to fix my broken shift button he tells me that part is not sold separately I would have to buy a new shifter assy. for 140 bucks, I told him about the video on you tube with the guy showing the shift knob repair kit in a gm box with the # on it so I thanked the guy hung up and called another chevy dealer gave him same # he was able to cross the old # over to the New # 42423234 and order the part for $14.08 cents.

So basically I'm seeing that our automatic shift assy. Was only made to last long enough to get them out of warranty. Go Chevy!

Many manufacturers do that..the flawed part is replaced with the same flawed part. Sometimes there is a redesign of the part.

To my knowledge there has been no redesign as of yet. Replacement is your only option for now. Replacement can be done in less than 10-20 minutes of your time.

Someone see if you can use the part from the Focus/Escape instead. It's the same type of handle, complete with up/down shift buttons, but it looks and feels a little more substantial. I'm like 60% sure it will work without much modification.

As I understood from reading on here only the button is plastic and eventually cracks/breaks? Problem could be solved by a different type of plastic or , perhaps, by reinforcing the new one before installing. It could be reinforced with glue or epoxy?

just picked up the sonic today and in my invoice it has the part number 95441448 apparently a revised part number on 09/15 I had 70k miles and it was staring to stick.
