broke my oil filter cap

Trying to take the oil filter cap off and a piece of it broke off the nut on top and about 1/ 4 off the cap is gone how do I get the rest of it off?

enough to get a vice grip on?
Not sure if a salvage yard has that new of an engine, but the parts have to be at a dealership as that's used in more than a Sonic

Option 2: If you can get a good grip on it, can it be hand turned off with a shop towell wrapped around it for better traction? I'd say break of off, but that would send stuff down in to the oil tube...bad

Tiny strap like oil filter wrench or pliers around the outside of the cap? But then there is not much room to
leverage there.

I have a strap wrench but it is a full size doesn't really fit in there very well.

Well the strap wrench didn't work tried to use an oil filter wrench no luck if I could break the rest of it off wonder if I could unscrew the threaded part without pieces falling in the engine?

I've had the nut break off on the aluminum caps on the 3.6l V6 in the camaro/cts. I use a chisel to turn it until it loosens a little. Gotta be careful but it comes out. The shock usually helps it turn.

Once you split it, the pressure will release and the rest of it should turn out normally.

As far as dropping stuff in there, if you pulled the filter out already, stuff a rag in the bottom of the housing. If not, the filter should prevent anything from falling in, just be careful when removing the filter after breaking out the housing.

The nut broke off mine its a plastic cap I can get the filter out now there is part of the side left I should split the side down to the housing to be able to unthread what's left?

I would try to squeeze it in, yes. If it splits, it should come out of the threads fairly easily.

The part that it screws into, I don't know if it's separate, on the Ecotec series in the cobalts and such, it's part of the block. Try to avoid damage to the engine side if it's not a replaceable housing.

I had it towed to a shop they broke off the remaining top of the cap and used a screwdriver hit it with a hammer and split the threaded part squeezed it and came right out.
