Broken Window... Just my luck

I was driving home from picking my dad up from an out of town gig and I decided to take the back roads home. When we got back into town, I drove about two miles in when my front passenger window exploded... now I'm not sure if someone threw something while I was driving or if it just spontaneously combusted.

I heard a loud pop and then the glass broke, it came inside, glass flew towards me. I was already in a neighborhood, but I didn't notice any people on the street while I was driving by. For some reason I didn't have the reflex to step on the brakes, I just kept driving about 300 ft. then my dad said to turn around when we got there all I saw on the ground was the glass from my car. No rocks, no broken glass bottles, nothing but my passenger side window shattered to pieces.

Is anything even gonna be open being that it is Labor day weekend?
Do I take the remains of the shattered window off myself? and how?
Should I even still drive my car around with no window?

What do I do?

Vacuum as much as you can.
Call around, Safelite may be open today. who knows.
If the weather's good, you can drive, just beware that it'll be vulnerable to intruders.

Had you hit a bump when it happened?
I only ask because in the off-chance that no one threw anything, etc, it might have been the car itself.
Windows are supposed to close tight, but if somehow the track was misaligned or something and caused a bind, your window could having been flexing for a while and bumps,etc would cause harsh trauma to the window eventually making it burst.

Remember, it's safety glass so it doesn't crack it just bursts.

First off, glad you're okay. Above me is some fantastic information, I just have a couple more things to add. If you are going to drive, invest in some eye protection and avoid the freeway. The buffeting is going to be irritating; it will help to open all windows.

From a shop's perspective, if you cover the window up temporarily with plastic, don't use duct tape. It leaves behind a mess and, although it will clean up, it can be aggravating especially on the black plastic around the mirror and that "skateboard tape" between the windows on the door posts. Buy a roll of 2" wide masking tape instead. Comes off cleaner and will still hold long enough to get the window replaced.

Your repair shop will thank you.

Seen this a few times under various circumstances. Best guess any's ever had was defective glass. Happens occasionally but is rather rare. What often leads for the defect to show is a temperature difference. In case of immobile windows, sometimes they were installed incorrectly and had constant tension until they broke.

Wait, that sounds familiar... I forgot all about the ceramic breaking glass thing. XD

Doesn't it have to be thrown really, really hard though? So it would have probably been thrown from fairly close to the road...

I don't know never did it
But it is common here for ppl to do this at gas stations to get purses etc while ppl are pumping guess it's not a loud crash when it shatters

Same thing happened to wife's '79 Ford Fairmont rear passenger window While on the freeway. No indication of object impact.

I've never heard of this spark plug/ceramic thing. Could somebody shed some light?

Ceramic is a vey hard material and with edges when a spark plug insulator is broken can be used very easily to smash a car window on slight impact.
