Did my dealer overfill with oil?

My car has sounded slightly different lately and it seems like my mileage went down slightly so I took a second look at my receipt from my first oil change. It shows they charged me (then credited back) for 5 quarts of oil. I've had my car parked for a few hours now and it was finally cool enough for me to check and it looks way too full to me. What do you think? Yes, I cleaned off the dipstick first.
This is the first time I've had someone change my oil in several years and I planned to have the dealer do all of my changes but am seriously doubting that decision now.

From what I've heard, the sonic takes just less than 5 quarts. It is hard to tell from the blurry pic. Is the oil above the full mark?

A 1.4L will take 4.2 quarts per owners manual.

When I changed my oil I only put 4 quarts in to make it full. You will ruin something if you keep running it that way.

Change your own oil from now on if you want piece of mind.

+1 I am the only one who changes the oil in the Soinic and will be the only forever. I've heard too many horror stories about the dealerships with oil changes.

I have the dealer change my transmission oil in my sonic yesterday. however, I stood right there and watch them the whole time.

They don't bill you for the exact oil they used. If a car takes 4.5 quarts then they bill out 5 quarts. If it takes 6.1 quarts then you get billed 7 quarts.

thats even worse in my book since i'm sure they didn't give him the rest of the quart from the .2 quarts they pulled out of it.

Don't they pump the oil out of drums vs filling from quarts or gallon jugs like a shadetree mechanic would?

they may. when they changed the oil in my transmission i had brought the 2 quarts for them to do it.
i imagine you are correct in your observation though.

Five quarts is correct. Your Sonic requires approximately 4.8 quarts with filter change. Please check your Owner's Manual in the Technical Data section pg. 12-2.

you may be right, but he's posting this in the 1.4L section of the forum which leads me to think your not right about that because the 1.4L only takes 4.2 quarts.

he's never stated his motor. that would clear things up for us.

They pump from bulk oil containers unless its a car that requires a strange viscosity or type.

It also has to do with the computer program they use. The programs don't allow for decimals to be imputed for quantities. I'm sure they could fix this but why would they. 99% of the customers don't care.

Perhaps I clicked the wrong subforum on my phone but I thought I posted in the 1.4 section. Not only is the oil above the line, it's above the entire section with any markings. While we're discussing me checking my owner manual, my dipstick doesn't have any words on it, just lines. Nothing says Min or Max like the owner manual claims.

The notches are the max and min. If you think the oil is over filled then either drain some out yourself or take it back to the dealer.

They probably assumed it was like the bigger ecotechs that take 5 quarts.
