Diverter or bigger intercooler?

Hi guys and gals,
I just got my 2014 1.4t ltz hatchback a few months ago and I love it. I just receive my ddm works CAI in the mail today and purchased a zzp cat back exhaust. But anyway looking way into the future (after bigger injectors a full tune and the "Python" custom turbo set up from MPFab *cough cough take my money cough* lol) I was looking into intercoolers. Would it be a better idea to go with just the diverter or get a bigger intercooler? Thanks for the help.

I would justify going and picking up mpfab intercooler kit depending on your budget. Can't beat the quality and he has excellent customer service.

yeah either Mpfab or try out cxracing if you're on a tight budget and sell the cai it comes with it

Thanks guys. I think I'm gunna go with the mpfab intercooler especially after I read the thread where he tested his against the stock intercooler and said that we could see, it was either, 20 or 30 whp. So I'll be placing my order in February. (That was the deal with my wife, I get my CAI and exhaust now and don't buy more until February.

On a side question after this intercooler I plan on getting a full trifecta tune. Will I I need to note that in the comments box when I buy the tune? And how should I word it?

You do not need a tune to run the intercooler, but you should note it when you purchase the tune. If they tune for it you'll probably see more gains because the tune will be optimized for it.

I am not going to tell anyone what to buy, but I will tell you why I choose MPFab where I can. Not to bash on any other company here but cxracing has absolutely no proof that there kit actually works. While zzp is a very reputable company they also do not have any data proving this core actually increases power. Doubling capacity doesn't necessarily mean an increase in power. And for all those who bought the rebel kit, you bought the kit assuming that there dyno numbers (which are coming) will have an increase. DDM never released a intercooler because of the reason that they actually lost power experimenting with different intercoolers. Certainly makes me wonder if this is the same scenario with the CX-kit. It seems stupid to buy anything that does not have the proof that it actually works. MPFab has the data, he tells you the brand, he will even tell you how much hp the part is good for. The customer service is excellent because of the reason that he is the guy in charge and the guy doing the work.

Not to ruffle any feathers here, this is only my opinion. It does not pay to go cheap.

i almost agree with everything you said lol. MPFab parts are great, but not everyone can afford that. as far as intercoolers and charge pipes go, the actual goal of those parts is not to increase power, but to increase air flow and air cooling capabilities, in order to be able to stand up to more power being produced.

that being said, an aftermarket intercooler that is larger than, but constructed the same or better than an OEM intercooler, will provide better cooling, as the air has to move through more fins in the cooling process.

I back ZZP's products 100% for the simple fact that my last car had nothing but ZZP parts on it, and all parts were tuned/dynod and all showed the gains that are to be expected given other supporting mods, and tune.

Ultimately, it depends on what you're looking for when modifying your car. If the car puts down more power, but creates a lot of heat in the process that could potentially damage the engine, and an aftermarket part dyno's less power, but the temps are much cooler, i'd take less power.

I only got the cxracing intercooler because i got it for $250 with all hard tubes. there was 0 power loss that i can physically feel and the charge temps are very good.

can't complain there lol only reason i got the RAW charge pipes and zzp intercooler is because i got both of them 50% off xD tester price on charge pipes and black friday on intercooler, total invested=$350

Your not going to have to worry about the dyno numbers aspect for the rebel auto worx charge pipes not being there for long. I will be scheduling some dyno runs and dial in when these tubes get test fitted and installed to see the gains over the stock piping. Just someone please remind me to actually post them in a few weeks. I'm very curious to see what kind of gains are made along with a lot of other people. I'll also at some point purchase the same intercooler core that mpfab uses in his kit and get some dyno runs with that in as well since it's only $450. Some times it pays to be the guenea pig for the benefit of others.

Our factory charge tubes are made of expandable rubber, that swells up during boost. Due to swelling up, some pressure (psi) is lost in the low end. It eventually comes back but initially it's crap system.

Now look at the aluminum charge pipes. They won't swell under boost, therefore they will maintain psi better, so it's not so much a power gain per say as it is smoother power, and power lower in the power band.

Also, aluminum charge pipes CAN yield power gains via proper tuning, but even someone running the stock tune could benefit from them for the reason I stated in my last paragraph lol.

Lets not lose sight of what I am trying to say. I never said any of these products didn't work. They could have a 20hp increase for all I know. I am saying I think it is dumb to buy something that isn't even backed by data. Going over to aluminum piping could be just as good as rubber if it flows poorly… again, this goes back to proving your product. And yes if you had stock rubber vs aluminum doing the exact same route, aluminum is superior.
