It takes a long time for heat to work.

My 2013 LT hackback takes a long time (20 minutes or more at times) to get warm. I am around 76.5k mileage on her.

My car was warm in under 5 miles of driving today at 2F. 2013 RS w/ 31k miles. I only idle for about 30 seconds until I slowly creep out of my driveway on cold mornings and baby it until I get heat. Check your coolant level.

I added coolant and it works faster... maybe water pump is starting to go, but looked at thermastats and shocked by the cost....

I have complained about my car doing this in the past threads. Adding coolant wasn't a fix of the root cause but it was an easy thing to try.

There is no particular problem.

You have a ultra efficient 4 cylinder with a massive cooling system.

These things just take time to heat up.


I added AMSOIL coolant boost, and it did help

The 1.4 definitely loses heat quickly at -20C and colder. Coolant temp drops pretty quickly while stopped and idling at a light.

You can boost heater performance slightly by using HVAC recirculation. Heating already heated air instead of heating the cold outside air.

It's normal for this car. Even at only -7C it still takes my car 15 minutes to get to operating temp. I try and stay down a gear and keep the revs up in the winter. And keep the blower fan on setting 1 until warmed up. And as mentioned already, keep on recirculate.

Here is an Idea that I have not seen for all you cold northerners!, what if you could do a raidiator and IC grill block? prevent the wicked cold air from affecting you? the motor is so small. anything helps.

paint the cardboard black. Loop it over the hood latch (with a hole around the hatch) to hold it in place.
I wouldn't block ALL the grill, but maybe 50%

I have no idea what a DTC is.

And like what was mentioned earlier, keep the air on "Recirculate" to help warm the cabin.

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code

They're how the engine computer communicates any problems it detects when an OBDII scanner is connected.

I've never been above using cardboard over the grill where our winters are concerned. Although I have some sheet aluminum I can cannibalize from an old college project that might cover the open portion of upper grill.
