Random High Pitched Noise Driving me Nuts...

About a week ago, I am driving down the road and all of a sudden I get a wicked High pitched sound and I can't tell where it's coming from. It's happened to me 3 times now. It happens quickly and randomly and I can't find anything that affects it (YET).

Here are some of the things I am looking for when if DOES happen.....

Can I control it with the volume?
Is it coming from the radio?
Is it only when my Phone is Sync'd?
Am I picking up interference from somewhere?
Is it microphone feedback somehow?

I just had an oil change, and this started to happen. Not saying it's related, but I've had the car 6 Months and that's the ONLY thing that has happened to it that's different.

A few more things that MAY help me narrow it down. It only happened for 5 seconds yesterday, but it seems it was near the same spot on the highway I noticed it the previous time. But can't be sure.... I drive by there again today, so will be watching for it.

I have recently been using BringGo, and to fix the sound issue I downloaded a Blue Tooth audio level adjustment program. I wonder if somehow, it's affecting Blue Tooth Settings and Microphone feedback. I've had this set up for about a month though, and it's just now happening, so I find it hard to believe it's related, but could be.

I can't even be sure it's something like Microphone feedback or even coming from the radio. By the time I thought to try to Adjust the volume, it's gone.

Anyone else get a random high-pitched sound, and know where it comes from?

I wasn't smart enough 1st time or quick enough 2nd and 3rd time to shut off the radio. I did try to play with volume yesterday when it happened, but I disappeared faster than previous times.

If I had to guess, it sound like something inside the cabin. Almost like Mic Feedback. You know how loud and annoying that can be.

I have a feeling it's going to happen again, so I will race to the power switch if it does, to at least know it's radio related. Just wondered if anyone else had something similar, and found it...

I have recently noticed this same thing happening. I have an RS with the 6MT. I have been unable to identify it, but I have been thinking it is in the stereo as well. I wondered if it was some sort radio station feedback the first time I heard it, but it has happened a couple times since so I am not sure.

For me, it seems to occur when I am in 1,2,3 gear at about mid rpm and only lasts a second so its really hard to identify. It is intermittent, not happening all the time and I really don't think it is a transmission problem.

mine is in 4th gear radio on/off. It rises and falls with RPM's and is a very high pitiched even tone. let off the gas and it stops

Kristen, thanks for the offer, but as for me, I don't feel like driving 30 miles to the dealer and have no way of making it happen.

For me, I also doubt it's related to the transmission. I have the 1.4T Auto, and I was in an area going uphill from what I remember, but the sound was constant once it reached it's high frequency pitch. To me, it reminded me of when someone holds a mic in front of a speaker. Just a high frequency feedback that peaks at one note.

I don't drive a lot, so it's going to be hard for me to narrow down. For now, I am not going to change a thing I do, to see if it comes back. If I can catch it, and it stays on long enough, I will do a few things like;

a. See if I can control it's volume off the steering wheel's Volume control.
b. Mute it.

If I notice it happen in the same spot on the highway it did before, I'll take another pass by the same area immediately without changing a thing.


Like I mentioned, my first impression is that the mic in the car is somehow ON, and it's picking up a sound and just keeps recycling it via feedback until something breaks the cycle. But, it's just a guess.

With my testing of BringGo, and the problems I've had with getting that stable, as well as BringGo's Settings and the Blue Tooth Volume Settings, I wonder if somehow, one, or both, of the programs, along with the MyLink Radio, are somehow leaving the Mic ON, or in an unstable state, thus causing what seems like a mic feedback problem.

It will be an interesting challenge, but I'll find it...

Went for a test drive with my dealer for brake related problems. I wasn't going to mention this high-pitched, random squeal, but it happened twice as we took my car out for a test drive. It's too intermittent and doesn't stay on long to be able to track the source. But, at least the service rep heard it.

Being in the passenger seat this time, it sounds like it's coming from the drivers side, but it's pretty hard to pin down the location. Seems to happen when driving at a higher speed. It doesn't seem to be related to RPM's or anything like that, but next time it happens, I'll floor it to see if it changes. (Or hit the brakes, if they are working )

Solved (I think)....

I had an issue with my brakes as well (in another thread). We think that high pitched noise was the air escaping from the brakes booster back through a bad check valve. It did sound like someone squeezing a balloon and letting air out slowly, when it did happen. Both problems should be gone now. I love my car again hehe...

I have a 2012 1.4Turbo, HB auto. Mine did this to my wife a couple times. When it finally happened to me I had just started the car in a parking lot. Turned out it was a blower door/duct/seal or something. Radio was off, turned off blower motor noise stopped. Turned on blower, noise didn't return.
