Reservoir Leak

Anyone else have their coolant reservoir leak?

For 2 years now I've thought I've had a radiator leak. There's dried coolant down the drivers side of the radiator. I haven't addressed it because it hasn't gotten worse and I have to top it off only once a week.

Now because of coronavirus and me being sick, I haven't driven the car for over a week. And when I've gone out to the garage, I find a slowly increasing puddle of coolant under it. Since I haven't driven it, there's an easily identifiable trail of coolant that goes all the way up to the bottom of the reservoir. Anyone think that's my leak? And not the radiator? Whenever I checked it before I never noticed coolant on the reservoir, I'm guessing because it ran off of it while driving?

It seems to be slowly seeping from stress cracks on the bottom of the reservoir. And the dried coolant on the radiator is right beneath it.

Very common for it to crack overtime I replaced mine with a metal reservoir

Ditto with the metal. I can help you get in contact with the guy who makes them, about $220. Or I can send you my old plastic one. No Leaks when I changed it, you just cover a few bucks for shipping and it’s yours. It’s a little yellowed because it’s plastic but it never leaked.

Another cheap option may be a bottle of K Seal. $20 solution until you get a nice shiny metal one installed. I used K Seal to fix a coolant leak recently and was impressed with the results.

I think I remember K-Seal being for radiators and heater cores? Not really a good idea.

I was thinking of jb welding the reservoir. I've done that on older cars but I think it wouldn't work on a pressurized reservoir like on our cars.

Not sure of the price for a 1.4L, but I did one of these a while back on our 1.8L Sonic. Rockauto was about $40 shipped, with a new cap.

Very easy repair, all you need is a 10 mm socket and a pair of pliers. Just make sure you have a helper to hold up the coolant lines as you detach them.

To avoid introducing air into the system, I unbolted the tank, lifted it up and put a bucket under it in the engine compartment, detached the hoses (helper held them up so they would not drain), attached hoses to new tank, filled new tank, then dropped it and bolted it in place.

Don't over-tighten the bolts or you could crack the new tank. Really, the bolts just hold the tank in place as a safety - it has a "key" that slides into the steel part of the car.

I've had air in the heater core on a few of these and they are truly a pain to bleed, so a bit of care is well worth it.

But still a 10-15 minute job without jacking or getting under the car at all.

Zachary Sycks makes and sells the metal coolant tanks. They look amazing. Around $175. Sight glass option ass well. I’ve already replaced my leaking tank with a plastic one but if I need to replace again I’m going with one of these. A buddy has one and swears by it. The metal tanks look like the Sonic should have came with it stock. Search his name in the Failbook groups. Chevy Sonic is one he sells in.
