I received a roof basket about 2 years ago for free. Since then I have been deciding on a car to buy as well as how to mount this basket. I then bought a sonic, which did not fit the bill but ive wanted since they came out. I saw someone on the forum bought a rhino vortex and mounted their led strip to that which was the inspiration to what I was going to do. I decided to do 3 light bars for two reasons. First reason is that I was following a company on social media that was selling 3 light bars for the price of 1, second was that I could use 2 side mounted lights for work. So lets get on with the build, first with parts.
1 - universal crossbars with universal feet
1 - 42in double layer LED lb
2 - 52in double layer LED lb
3 - wiring harnesses
6 - electrical hangers
1 - 120in 1/2in steel pipe
1 - 48in 1/2in steel pipe
4 - 1/2in threaded rod caps
4 - 1/4in bolts 2.5in long
4 - lock nuts
1 - roll of rubber tape
10 - hose clamps
6 - self tapping screws
lots - cable ties
next we move on to how and why. I'll post more photos on where all the parts went.
I saw one post about going through the fire wall but it was only good for one light bar. I combined what one other thread did when they ran the wire down the windshield. For all three, I did one down the drivers, one down the passenger, and one in the seal for the drivers door. The one in the drivers door comes through the firewall and ill post more pictures later. So I have all 3 buttons coming through the firewall and one more for the front light bar. The 3 buttons are under the light switches. Extremely bright and useful.
We used the pipe and clamps to attach the light bars to the basket. cut the the 120in in half so that i could have 60 on each side. then the 48 on the front. the hose clamps were used in connection with the rubber tape to avoid vibration. then i added the hangers to the pipe and also put rubber tape in between then mounted the light bar to the hangers. self tapping screws were to keep the clamps in place and the bolts were to keep each of the rods from rolling.
Cost: all in was about $300 dollars.
170 for the 3 light bars
70 for the crossbars
about 60 for the rest from lowes
