what do the bushings do? stiffen up the shifts?... I've not read into the posts about them.

They make the shifter a little more certain. It feels more gated. Less vaugness. For the price it's great. I ordered something else and just got these with them so I put them in. It is a noticeable difference

I personally didn't find any insulation, but I have an RS, mayhem the reason why it is not there.

I personally just took the stock piece out and reinstalled it with the large metal washer on the bottom. Essentially, flipping each one around. Mainly because I can't be bothered to wait for it to ship across the border and visibly noticed that they can be reinstalled upside down.

Now, worst case, if I take my car in to get serviced and complain about the grind, maybe they will link it to the mis-assembly of the bushings.

When they arrive, get a stopwatch and start it before you install. I'd wager that anyone proficient in removing interior paneling can do this mod in under five minutes. Report back brother!

yeah, I took the shifter surround off...took no effort...
I'll be done in 5 minutes... but I will be slow with the foam!

My 13 RS had the foam, took me about 30min total from start to finish because I was being careful not to rip the foam. Once I had it out, ~5min to pull the old bushings and swap the new ones in.
