Last weekend a friend of mine and I decided to go out to pick up pizza and soda for a Formula 1 party we were hosting. On our short trip I decided to pop onto the freeway (696 at Orchard Lake for Michigan people) to save some time getting to Telegraph Rd. This ended up being the last trip Id ever take in my Sonic.
A short time after getting on the freeway I lost control of the car and veered into the retaining wall at around 60-70mph. We still aren't 100% sure what caused the accident (None of the parts I added appeared to be to blame and speed was not a factor. I was about to enter a construction zone and was slowing down.) The theory is I ran over something since once of my wheels appeared to have blown out and it was pierced by a large piece of metal, which essentially caused the front left to completely lock up. Regardless, we hit the wall and spun twice, luckily missing all traffic and ending up against the wall.
A couple good Samaritans stopped to help my friend and I out, they said they were worried because I guess we were in the car for a few minutes before opening the doors. All I know is there was a ton of smoke from all the airbags. Both my friend and I walked away with some wicked bruises and a few cuts but no major injuries. Most of it is a still a blur, I remember telling him to hang on the second I realized I couldn't stop it from crashing. He did, and ended up pulling the passenger grab handle right off its mounts.
Anyway, I just finished clearing up the insurance stuff this week and am going to be in the market for a new car, not sure what yet but probably GM again. I think this accident is proof these are INCREDIBLY safe cars, hitting a wall head on at around 70mph? No major injuries or time at the hospital? The insurance adjuster I spoke to was amazed too.
I have to admit even a few hours after the magnitude of the accident hadn't hit me yet. Don't get me wrong, I was definitely worried about my friend (I was driving its my responsibility to keep my passengers safe), but I was also still thinking about the couple grand I put into aftermarket parts. Now after a week I'm just glad that my friend and I are OK, it could have been a lot worse. I can get new stuff, you cant replace people. Thankfully this little Chevy kept us safe.
