Tinting the paint?

Hi all,

Is there a way to tint a car's paint?
A forum "search" failed.
I am particularly curious about tinting silver paint, perhaps purplelish.
If so, how durable and practicle is it?

The only things I can really think of is:

A) Dupli-Color :: Metalcast Probably not durable, or practical.
or
B) Take some non-metallic red/blue paints or tints and mix just a small amount into a regular automotive clearcoat. Sand the vehicle, spray it on just like clear. More durable, maybe not necessarily practical, but I also don't know how the solvents/tint/etc. would react with the resins of the clear coat. If I had the material to experiment with, I would try it, but I really don't have any non-metallic blue, nor any reason to order any. =/

The wife works in the paint dept at lowes and I'll ask her. I know it's not strictly automotive but maybe someone there knows something.

you are talking about a candy coat. You tint the clear before you spray it. Its as durable as a professional paint job...which is what you need to do it. An expensive professional paint job...

U used the duplicolor metal case on the chrome on my Harley ( the red)I loved it its very durable for what it is and it sports easy .

So general consensus from the paint reps my wife called was get a new paint job. There's no cheap easy way to tint your paint.

Well as it was pointed out, it's not "a whole new paint job", it's tinted clear coat which means your base paint stays and it costs less than a whole paint job.

(Instead of several base sprays and several clears, you don't pay the $ for base paint which is high, you go straight to clear and pay for tint)


It's the same thing that happens when you pearl.

The problem with candy, and the reason it's expensive, is that it's very easy to end up with uneven coloring as it darkens with each coat. Unskilled application nets horrible results.

Should I have the desire and the money, I live near Killer Paint. I don't think I could justify going anywhere else.
