Was the damage and repairs documented? Who completed the repairs and do they specialize in rebuilding salvage cars? In my opinion if you can't get answers to those questions, walk away. Other issues to consider are lower resale value, greater difficulty getting a loan, and possibly higher insurance premiums.

I just found a 2014 Sonic LT sedan (adds alloy wheels, power windows, better speakers-also has fog light option) with 61K miles listed for $8500.

I am not sure potentially saving $2000 is worth the long term headaches of buying a salvage car.

It would be worth to drive it on the highway (see how it handles at say 65-75) and some bad side roads to see if it has any issues if your inspection goes well.

It all depends on how badly the vehicle was damaged. With today's high cost of parts and repair work, even a small accident can result in the car being given a salvage title and scrapped by an insurance company. I would be mostly worried about damage to the car chassis, especially the front end. Unibody car chassis tends to buckle under heavy impact and such damage is most often not economically repairable. I would definitely stay away from vehicles with flood damage as those can be a real nightmare.
