Tire Review: General Altimax RT43

Tires are a difficult thing to choose, so I thought I'd help. Here is my take on my set of Altimax RT43.

Size = 215/60-15 on stock alloys

Miles on tires = 13,258

I drive mostly highway with a 50 mile round-trip commute daily, with occasional fun back-road romps.

So here goes:


PRO: predictable, good ride, good looks, superior inclement weather performance

CON: not especially sporty, T speed rating


All-around good tire, with competent, but not exactly sporty handling. They can be squirmy under very hard braking and have moderate, but acceptable, lateral grip.
They are predictable and have a good ride as well as an excellent sense of straight-ahead. Impact harshness is greatly reduced over the OE tires, and they seem fairly quiet too. And they are very good in inclement weather. They handle well and do just fine on the back roads with my little car, although they don't have an especially sporty feel to them. Mild winter this year, so limited experience with them in the snow but no complaints there.

Overall, an excellent touring tire that is fairly good in the twisties. I feel they have been the right choice for my daily driver.

I put these on my girlfriend's Toyota Yaris and agree with your review. Good wet/dry/light snow traction, pretty quiet, but they don't like being pushed hard. Definitely more of a "touring" type tire vs performance one, but would be good for 90% of drivers who just want a solid commuter tire.
