Top speed

I've known the top speed to be 131 on the autobahn as per video but I've managed 128. (Private road). The question is how fast have you gone in your sonic? How fast can it go? Hopefully no videos of you being a fool on some public highway just good clean fun. (If available in your area and/or you have the heart )


*edit: I know the STOCK topspeed to be 131

i've been up to 118, wasnt even intending to go that fast but i went to go pass a car that was driving below the speed limit, and when i went to pass the arse hole he sped up, so i had to speed up to pass him lol

I think max I've gone in it was 128mph before the new injectors went in and at that time I didn't know I had a major air leak in the system. now i'm thinking theoretically around 133-135mph once the leak is fixed and I have a new intercooler and down-pipe.
There are some members here who've gotten up to 149, but it got kind of unstable after that.

Yep, better springs or front sway bar will calm it down.

I find it funny you think this thing is unstable at 95mph. It feels pretty planted to me at 125 going straight and around light bend at 95 on stock suspension. Now if you want unstable at 95 where it feels floaty, drive a stock pontiac vibe AWD with 73k miles on the car and not a single piece of suspension has been replaced.

I'd have to disagree with the above post, my 69 VW Bug is more stable than the Sonic imho, both being on stock suspension as well. As soon as I got on the freeway for the first time after purchasing my Sonic, I nearly took it back because I thought something in the rear was broken. The car has so much body roll and lean that it becomes a handful to drive, and I've only had it to about 85mph. Wouldn't trust these tires/suspension setups to save my life these days.

I felt uncomfortable with heavy braking at highway speeds. Which makes me question the suspension. Other than that suspension feels ok. Im on LT suspension. Would RS suspension fix brake
issue?

I am not sure what everyone that says the car is unstable on the highway. While I have not gone over 90 myself, I drive about 125 miles a day and not noticed any instability. I know that if it is windy is moves a bit and while behind some trucks also due to turbulence. I have an LT sedan which is stock as far as I know since I bought it used.

Our other car is a 550I Beemer... the car will easily do 155 mph and is just as drivable at 150 as the care is at 80 mph. When it comes to the Sonics, I agree with robsander, any of you that are driving your Sonic... over 95 mph, are all semi-out-of control. Should any quick maneuver be required at that speed with our short 99" inch wheelbase...very likely will roll the car.

The Sonic is not a sports cars, it is a compact economy car. I do not understand why it is being compared to cars costing 5 times more, let's compare to other cars in it's class.

Because all the cars in it's class drive like poop. You need to step up significantly to get a decent ride these days.

to be honest, GM needs to turn this thing into a sports car. They made performance parts for it and they supported it for the GRC. If they could sell it as an eco-sport like how ford is with their new eco-boost 2015 mustangs. That would appeal to a lot of enthusiasts looking for a good affordable hot hatch. It may be an econobox but it sure as hell doesn't act like one.

So on my trip to Orlando this past weekend I hit 103 on a short straight away. On flat road it seems fine but as hit hit bumps it start to bounce to much to be safe. Also I know 80ish emergency maneuvers are really bad, I can't imagine it at that speed.


If I die, bury me in my truck, because it's never been in a hole it can't get out of!

I'm the the idiotic one here who's doing the dangerous things. Flying around bends at 115mph and hard braking into lane changes at 95. Glad I'm done doing that cause it really is scary.

I did a high speed maneuver a while back while driving to work early in the morning. I was changing lanes from the left to right lanes just past a curb and I did not see the dead deer until it was in my headlights. I swerved to the right to avoid it and almost ran into the rest of the deer. I swerved back to the left to avoid it and I saw the stability control light come one as I was swerving around the deer parts. I do not know how far I went from side to side but I do not e en remember hearing the tires squeal. I was going between 75-80 when it happened. The only thing not sock on my car are the Moog end links, I noticed that the front feels tighter after I had them installed.
