turbocharger liquid cooled

Does anyone know how the liquid cooling in the turbo works? Is there a water jacket around the center body where the bearings are? Are the bearings on this turbo roller/ball or plain (hydrodynamic)?

If it's anything like the OEM turbocharger on my Probe, then you are exactly right in your assumption. There's should be 2 coolant lines & 2 oil lines running to the center body.

Which is why no turbo timer is needed for those that will begin to ask. With liquid and oil cooling, the turbo will reach a safe temp. As your "spirited driving" ends, meaning by the time you are ready to turn the car off, the turbo is fine.

A neat feature that my old 86 Audi 5000 turbo had was an auxilliary coolant pump that would continue to circulate coolant through the turbo after the engine was shut off. It had a separate thermostatic control that would run it as long as 30min. depending on how hot the car was when it was shut off.

OEM turbo timer. Good idea at the time. But it broke, didn't it

My sister had an 86 Audi 5000... it literally fell apart on the road. We were driving down the street and I kept noticing things in the road behind us that were not in the road in front of us. Then the car made a loud noise and died. Apparently the things falling off were quite important lol


The neat thing with modern oil/water cooled turbos is, as Sonic said, since the oil and water cool at different rates the turbo can cool off safely and slowly without the need for a turbo timer.

Actually, I sold that car with 350,000 miles on it. The only problems I had were electrical and mostly related to the power windows and idiot light display. Mechanically, it ran like a champ was one of the best $500 cars I've owned.

I guess they were hit or miss in the quality dept.
