I can confirm the inability of the OEM Hankooks in the snow, currently running them in the rear, with the cheapest All-Season Discount sells on the fronts:

I spun on an entrance ramp the first time we got snow, and the rear is like ball-bearings in the snow, while it's fun; it's a little too much fun for me; will be getting two more of the Ohtsu's in the rear ASAP.

Blizzaks are the good stuff. We have a set on our gti had them on our dart before and made a huge difference

I still have the stick tires on my 2012. These tires blow!!!! How do you get stuck in 2 inches of snow? Well with these tires it is possible.... The spinning of the tires happens so easy. Sliding all over the place. I am replacing them ASAP with some better all season tires. Back to Michelin I go.

Stuck in 2" of snow? I had no issues with OEM tires in 6" of snow. You just have to adjust your driving style for the conditions. I admit they are not the best tire for snow by any stretch of the imagination, but they are not as bad as some of you make them out to be. That being said I run snow tires in the winter. I drive too many miles to have been able to use the OEM tires for more than one winter. New they had enough thread to do the job, but a year later and I would have been looking for different tires for winter anyways. Im sure they would have been no worse than the previous year, but I prefer a dedicated winter tire on my car.

I wish I could have taken a picture. It was maybe 3 inches at most. Trust me I was in disbelief as it was happening. I couldn't get out because I was facing down hill on the snow and the tires just kept spinning. I eventually got out with the push of a few friends. I have also had friends ride in the car when it just dusting outside. They have even said something about the sliding and spinning. Its fun when you want that to happen until your sliding towards another car and you don't know if your going to stop. Grant it you are only going 10-15 mph it is still scary knowing I could mess up my handsome Jack (my Sonic).
Guess this just comes down to the well know crappy tires. I will replace them and move on.

The Stock hankooks are absolutely horrible tires. i replaced mine within one year of owning the car. Went with a set of BridgeStone Turanza Serenity Plus (Grand Touring All-Season) Low Rolling Resistance, Blackwall, 205/55R16 (23Lb's/tire) for my sonic and i havent had a lick of problems since.
my sonic blasts thru the snow and handels so much better on the slush and whatnot. i really hate the ABS on these cars. way too active in my opinion. turning the traction control off helps calm it down. the ABS will still activate but not as often if it was on. The new tires and traction control off and adjusted driving and ive gotten my sonic thru some pretty nasty stuff.
SO glad i got rid of the stock tires when i did. been happy with the new ones ever since

OMG!!! Had my first real drive in the snow the other day. I felt like I was driving a hovercraft. It felt like it was above the snow and just floating along. HORRIBLE!!! But a fun challenge lol.
I would rather have rear wheel drive, like my 67 Firebird, where is slid around, but at least I knew how to spin that rear-end around when I needed it. That was FUN Driving! REALLY am missing my AWD Grand Cherokee for its control though.
I read mixed opinions on HanKook's, so thought I'd stick with them for a year. Plus, the way the car felt, like I was on air, I wondered if new tires would even help that much. Seemed like the whole car is just pretty light, and floating around....
I did some tire research, last year, but where I only go out once a week or so, I didn't buy. I was pretty sure I wanted the ProContact™ with EcoPlus Technology.

When I was looking to replace my tires one of the members posted a link to a tire review which was very informative. It had the tires I was thinking of buying and they rated very well. I had them mounted on 12/31/14 and they have been great so far, not any snow yet but heavy rain. GY ComForTred touring 205/60/16 v rated, 21lbs only 12/32 tread depth.
Does anyone have problems with the windows not rolling down in the winter? Any solutions? They seem to get frozen shut easily even on dry days. Its easily fixable by slamming the door shut while rolling down the window, but I don't usually remember it until I've started driving, so that's annoying.

Question on the HVAC. Does Defrost force you into drawing air in from the outside, or is it a defect that it disables internal recirculation? This forced outside draw is annoying in city traffic; the exhaust you breathe in is quite noticeable. ( Not so much of an issue in very cold weather as that also tends to be very dry air and the heater alone is sufficient to keep things unfogged as well as warm.) The only workaround is to switch over to air conditioning but then you lose the vent under the windshield.

Have a 2014 stick sonic. Ok but seems the winter is not treating it well. Intermittently the left front wheel seems to want to hang/chatter/grind or whatever you want to call it and stopping is a real problem. Dealer can't find a problem but said the brakes should be checked every 20k kilometers. But that's not a warranty thing and the cost to "check" them would be $200. So what's wrong with this picture? Since it's a real safety worry I'm going to have a local garage take a look.

Make sure you are driving with the traction control turned off in the snow. The tc plays havoc with the way the car reacts in the snow.

That sounds odd. Seems to me TC would be "for" the snow!
Still, doesn't seem feeling and hearing the chatter is normal.
Yeah, only during braking. And had the car for... mebbe 6 months. Only happened 2 or 3 times. But when coming up to a stop lite and it doesn't want to stop and the LF wheel chatters n' grinds... really gets your attention when there are cars stopped in front of you.
