For us non-developers, is there any practical use of the development mode? I'm all for playing around but not so much when it comes to messing with the programming of the ICE or computer...

I was digging around last night (There are a ton of images) I did find the animations and the buttons etc... so to answer your question. Yes.

Modifying the interface is all about preference, and knowing how it is really put together... For instance, the "1" button on the phone has 3 stages and there fore 3 images to be modified. There are also different versions in the image, so I do not know which one affects which screen. So the modification is easy, but really tedious.
Adding MirrorLink and removing the speedLock seems fairly straight forward. You only need to move 3 files to 2 different locations. Then run the executable and wait for the update, then reboot (turn off the car, open the door so the unit power cycles).
There is also the matter of adding more file support to the head unit. It could be as easy as removing the file extensions from the blacklist in the xml. Oh, and you can change the amount of files allowed from 2500 to what ever you want. But that could have adverse performance effects on the system.
If the mods allow I would like to start a poll in another post so I have an Idea of where peoples interests are so I can concentrate on one thing... cause there is a lot of opportunity here. I really think that the risk is minimal with the methods I have dug up.

Theoretically It is possible. At CES last year (i think) they showed android auto on a mylink head unit... but unless we get that image, we aren't going to be able to do it. Same goes for carplay.

The 2016 Cruze will get the update but I was told head units will not be backward comparable.
The geek in me calls bull****. I'll have my techs try to run it when it comes out. My assumption is we'll have to use aCruze VIN to fool the gm computer

So, my 2013 LT had the radio and cd player in it. I am now in a 2015 LT with the My link and when I tried to voice dial today I got this message.....
Can you not voice dial with My Link?

Look at the phone when it initiates a voice function. The phone will request which app to use. Select your preferred (if Android I suggest Google).
You may have to repair the unit, but mine (galaxy s5) works in both driving mode or standard mode equally well.
I can use the steering wheel button (holding the top button) to initiate voice commands

I purchased a used 2013 Sonic LTZ last week and didn't have the BringGo app on the mylink radio, so I took it in today and asked for it to be updated, so when I got it back they said they updated it but it still didn't have the BringGo app. The SW I am at now is 10.29-95283115. Does that mean I can't get it on my radio or they just updated it to an older software version?
