Unforetunately I dont think GM will do this. I would love to see the same thing for sure. There was supposed to be a release for a malibu with the 2.0t engine for 2013 and that was scratched also. There was talk in the article about semi independent rear suspension. The way the sonic is built it would require complete frame modification and basically a totally new car underneath in order to achieve this. Again I would absolutely love to see it though. I would have thought they would do this to the cruze before the sonic. Especially being it would need the bigger power plant more so than the sonic. So far I think its a milestone for GM for the sonic in general. Reason being that for any small car of its size its the most powerful motor they have put in yet(talking about the 1.4 138 hp motor). The last time GM did anything that radical was in the early 90's with the typhoon and syclone trucks. They tend to stick there performance stuff to the higher end larger such as camaro and vette.
**** the 1.6, why use that when the LNF can easily make 300 with a tune?
I think it would make sense for a Sonic SS and here's why:
GM went through a lot of trouble in a media blitz advertising campaign (skydiving, bungie-jumping, etc.), on the new Chevy Sonic.
GM's focus on this car has been towards the new emerging Millennium Generation and Ford's apparent decision to bring over the Fiesta ST is like the gauntlet's being thrown down.
I mean, why go through all this trouble with these commercial stunts to lure young customers to this car only to have your rival, Ford Motor Company, come out with a suped-up Fiesta and not have GM respond?
Now there's the 130R and 140S on the drawing board, but that's a few years down the road. In the meantime, I think a Sonic vs Fiesta rivalry would do both company's (and America) some good. Especially in swooning this next new generation of buyers!
No, I think there is some serious meat to this rumor. I think we're entering a new era of small, fuel efficient muscle cars and it's time for the General to step up to the plate.
Peckerwood is going to be upset haha
