    Brake pad replacement at 189,000

We have 189,045 on our original set of brakes, a 2013 hatchback LT. This is a one owner car. I decided to change them out, here are the pics: I checked out a youtube video and was amazed to find there were only 2 bolts for each pad. I was due a tire rotation and thought that was a good time...

High Mileage Sonics - the longevity thread

I am up to 181,000 with the '13 sonic. We had it in to the dealer with an oil leak and coolant leak, the oil was barely a drip coming out of the oil filter housing, most would ignore it, we had it replaced, $390 The coolant turned out to be thermostat housing, they replaced it for $450. Now...

Control arm and ball joint assembly

This part was the easiest, loosening the nut. Also, the previous comment about getting the control arm on didn't make much sense to me as it went on rather easy as I did it. There was also a comment about a castle nut on the disassembly, I did not encounter any.

Need advice on my 2014 Sonic ltz please

Not your fault, I think the luck of the draw when buying used. I will make a wild guess that someone purchased it for their son/daughter and not only did they drive erratically, but also disregarded maintenance. Most of my automobiles I purchased new and kept for 10 years. Now that I am 65...

Need advice on my 2014 Sonic ltz please

I am surprised how much they are charging for the repairs. This car seems to be a lot of problems. Did you buy it new or used? I am wondering if someone really beat on it or if earlier maintenance was ignored. Dave

2015 Sonic LT CEL and weird codes

Maybe you did, but with an issue like this I would go to the dealership. We have a 2013 LT with 1.8L. There were some sensor issues the first two years of ownership, apparently had a lot to do with the lake effect of living near Lake Superior. Once we moved further away, there have been zero...

Need advice on my 2014 Sonic ltz please

Sounds like Mr. Google does not recommend driving too long with a lean mixture I am not a professional mechanic but this makes sense to me. Funny, my 2013 has never had a "check engine" issue since we moved away from Lake Superior. When we lived close to the big lake, there were constant...

    Chevy diehard

Also a Chevy fan here, currently driving a 2013 Sonic and 1988 Suburban. Love them both. I had one cooling system repair and recently some sway rod and control arm wear outs, we have some really rough roads here so understandable with ball joints, etc. I commute 125 miles/day and alternate...

Need advice on my 2014 Sonic ltz please

That sounds great! Sometimes it is a mistake they may make, they are only human. I hope it is never intentional when the car comes back with a problem. I hope you get many years with your car, I usually keep mine for 10 years however the ones we have now I have no plan for replacement. We...

Control arm and ball joint assembly

I got the control arm on, I am not a pro but will share the photos. I started at 12:45 pm and was just tightening the final bolt around 7:30 pm, less 2 trips to hardware store, 1 trip to NAPA, coffee break and supper. Here are the tools and work place, the car was well blocked I was able...

    Engine got wet….

I don't think it is "due" to be replaced. After everything is dried out, I would get the engine codes cleared and you may find that it is fine. If cold water got on warm coils, that can create a small crack which will result in some missing. If it was missing before you washed the engine, all...

    Coolant disappearing. Still

I top off to the full cold then see what happens. There could have been air in there. If you are not getting coolant in the oil and no visible leak it must be a leaky exhaust manifold gasket. Or a pin hole somewhere it evaporates. let us know Dave

    Newbie Questions

Sounds like you will either be lucky or not. My Sonic has been one of the best cars I have ever owned, and I am 65 years old and my first car a 1968 VW squareback. If they are keeping a maintenance schedule, that is a big plus. Dave

Need advice on my 2014 Sonic ltz please

I would try to find a different mechanic, sounds fishy to me. I had my Sonic in for simple service once and it came back with the alternator making a ton of noise. Could not NOT notice it. Alternator was fried just by going to the dealer. No question in my mind they compromised its...
