They are press fit and have to be pulled off with a strap. The shaft then has to be threaded to allow a standard knob to be screwed on. There is also an issue with clearance for the reverse lockout. There is an old post regarding how to modify the shifter assembly to accept a standard knob.

My guess the boots don't fit properly and your not getting proper spark. I tried to replace mine with NAPA boots and they fit horribly. I returned them and bought a NGK coil pak. They aren't that expensive.
