1.4L Exhaust manifold sneak peek / development

We had a chance to get a bit of a start on this, mostly just finished the flanges. However we had a concept tacked up today, and we can use it as a starting point once our turbo arrives. Until then here are a few pics and I will follow up when we make more progress.

What turbo you guys have coming for it??

I know it’s early but any idea on a price point??

And finally any odds of doing other turbo mounting flanges???

We will be using a GTX2860r Gen 2, with Tial SS turbine housing. Price is still a ways out but I know we are shooting for under $700.

Currently the only mounting flanges we plan to offer are T3, or V-band outlet.

If sonic had a slimmer radiator fan that was more efficient at it's job, That would help to free up some space in the area. If need be, you can always top mount it like MPfab has on his car. Though, I'm sure you guys are trying to make the kit compatible with other existing items on the market as well.

We have been looking at the radiator fan/shroud, we may have to come up with a better solution. It does take up a lot of space.

Stock fan is heavy too. Vince swapped for a universal ebay one way back, check preloaders build thread.

If all the ECU does is control a relay to power on power off. Then swapping in a different electric fan shouldn't be too awful.

The fan motor on the stock fan has a resistor on it, much like a heater blower motor would have. There is no reason you couldn't cut that off, and solder on a different fan solution to retain the variable funcationality. I attached a picture, its the top left dingus. It's kinda hidden in the shroud, so you don't really see it.

I know because................... I just had to replace mine.

That said, if you swap for a fan of different CFM specs, guessing you would need to play with operation settings in HPTuners/whatever you use to tune with. If you dig around in that menu you will see like coolant vs. duty settings etc.

I'm curious to understand why are you using another turbo and not the stock one.
Does that mean is NOT made to fit the stock turbo?
And if you're using another one, are you putting together a turbo assembly to go with it?

Hey TruSake, stock turbo is limited by compressor size (max airflow). Our turbo and manifold are connected as one piece so we can't bolt on different turbos. BNR, ZZP, Vermont Tuning, edit: and now Trifecta, offer options to stock turbos but the airflow/power limit is being reached with aftermarket tuning for these turbo upgrades.

This manifold would allow a traditional turbo to bolt to a flange. It doesn't necessarily need to make more power. Our exhaust manifolds have weak points that form cracks, so someone could use this as preventative maintenance with a small turbo, rather than making more power.

MPFab, Big Turbo Sonic, and others have custom exhaust manifolds and make impressive power numbers with stock internals. RacerX's work is exciting since it could be the first mail-order option for our 1.4t's instead of a custom job.

Except for the fact that crack in the manifold is actually common for any turbo running an internal wastegate. So no matter what, the crack will always form no matter what you do. The only time A crack in the exhuast manifold would be detrimental, is if there is air leaking out by the flange that connects to the head or outlet where the downpipe would connect, or if the crack caused the pin for the wastegate to have excessive play. Every stock turbo developes one, Every stock turbo has an internal wastegate. BNR even did a write up on this and is also a very a common topic across multiple platforms.

I can't believe there isn't something already set up for this engine. Hasn't the 1.4T been around since like 2008?
