1.8 Litre thermostats 2 different ones

I own a 2013 Sonic LT with a American made 1.8. Just for curiosity I looked up a replacement thermostat at NAPA.com. What I found was 2 completely different ones possible.

A plastic one NAPA AUTO PARTS
Part Number: NBH 34709
Attributes:
Number of Bolt Holes : 3
Outlet I.D. : .579", 1.233"
Outlet O.D. : .972", 1.512"
Thermostat Temp Rating : 221 Deg

A metal one NAPA AUTO PARTS
Part Number: NBH 34710
Attributes:
Number of Bolt Holes : 4
Outlet I.D. : 1.129"
Outlet O.D. : 1.335"
Thermostat Temp Rating : 221 Deg

Two completely different parts!!! Could the country of the engines origin be they key? I know they are made in USA, Korea and Hungary. One has 3 bolt holes and one has 4, also note the different shapes on mounting sides.

I looked my engine (USA made) and it was the plastic one with 3 bolts.

Both indicate 221F . They must be running the engines hotter . In times past , I seem to remember 190F - 195F to be about " normal " .

I found a 4 bolt hole metal one on the O'Reilly web site .

221F is stock temp for the thermostats. These engines run much hotter than older ones to help with emissions.

No clue what that NAPA one is for. The 1.8 uses a 4 bolt flange on the thermostat housing. Look for a metal one. The plastic ones tend to distort and leak. This is probably due to the 217-224*F operating temp range of the 1.8.

As stated by the previous poster, they run hotter to help with emissions and economy based on information I have found in the past.

Not following you. What discussed so far = no temp gauge? Even with Ultra-gauge, there is no temp info. Wish there was.

There is temperature on the ultra gauge. One of the reasons I bought it.

Yes, UG does have tempo gauge, but it's not available for Sonic, at least not on my 2013 LS AT.

That's weird, I have a 2012 model and it works. Try recalibrating it

Yes you are right. Not sure why it didn't activate the first time, but there now as you say. Now wish we had oil pressure. Do you have that?

Reason I said that was because people are so used to most cars running 190 or so. Would people freak out if they saw it running hotter much of the time.

On UG, I regularly see 217-221 degrees.
