2012 sonic LT alternator/electrical issues

Hey folks,

Was looking for a little help trying to pinpoint a problem i am having with my vehicle. Over the past month ive had an array of issues from led in the radio cutting in and out, radio completely cutting out and back on, doors locking and unlocking, and car stalling and starting back up in and out of acceleration. Ive had the alternator checked and it tested bad, but i was wondering if this is a known issue and/or could this not be the alternator but instead be an electrical issue. The dealership in my area are all booked for at least a week and id like to try and pinpoint a problem and fix it theough a mechanic friend i have.

Someone mentioned the other day that he had electrical issues. It ended up being a bad ground where a service guy broke the ground bracket. It caused all kinds of wierdness.

I had the alternator checked and it is showing an error at two seperate auto part stores. I bought a replacement alternator and getting that installed tomorrow. Will update if that fixes the problem.

Alternators are not a commonly failing part. There is no significant history behind it. Test your battery first.

I suppose i should have mentioned that i had the battery tested twice and it came back okay. The alternator was tested and failed twice. Pulling 13.2v instead of the 14.2v

If anything, the pistons and rings might not handle the boost. Also, the 1.8L is much more "over square" than the 1.4L. Both are long stroke small bore ratios but the 1.8L moreso.

I have 2012 Lt HB. 85k km just had my alt replaced, but was bearings, had bout 1/4` play

Hi Stanley, That guy was me as I just got so fed up with the dealer that had my car there for almost 5 months and they have replaced almoast every thing.
I had a jerk or engine miss fire and all the gauges went just mad and the odo meter went to zero. I bought HP tuners Pro and it helped me a lot in the sence that I could monitor all the functions. Well long story short, I took the car home and spend 3 days looking at everything possable.
1. Checked the battery and charging rate. was all in spec. 14 volt charging
2. Removed the fuse box and checked all pins and conections. found no problem.
3. Removed the ignition electrical part, cleaned it and tested. Tested the harness to the fuse box. found no problem.
On the third day I just told myself the ony way to sort this is to start at one point and work to the next point.
Well started at the alternator as it was charging correctly I still checked the harness. was all good.
Checked the cables and wires on the starter and found the earth cable was broken. Starter was replaced under warranty the year before.
I fitted a new heavy duty lug and all my problems dissapeard.

You might have a loose wire,cable or a bad connection somewhere. The unfortunate is that it is not easy to find and more difficult if you dont have any schematics. I was just lucky.

PS. Do not use a test light on these vehicles. They have very sensitive computers. Use ony a good multimeter.
