I picked up a 2017 Sonic fully loaded late last year and one of the first things I did was upgrade the lights as I wasn't happy with the sock halogens. I didn't want to post right away as I wanted to drive with them for some time before I gave my feedback. I've had them on for about 6 months and haven't had one issue and the stock projector housing looks fine. I've even taken the bulbs out to inspect the housing for burning or discoloration and don't see any sings and I've taken a 6 hour drive at night so if it was going to happen it would have happened then.
I've had HID's either stock or I upgraded in almost every vehicle I've had in the past 10 years so pretty hard to stay with a stock halogen light. Obviously some concern upgrading to an HID in a stock projector housing but I couldn't stand the light as I do take long drives on dark roads and the extra light helps a lot.
I installed 55w 5000k slim ballast for low and high beams. Note: high beams are awesome if you travel a lot in places with no ambient light but if you really need the ability to flash someone you'll basically lose this as the HID's done charge fast enough to flash highs effectively. So basically if you never use your highs probably don't need to waste the money.
Below is a link to pics I took comparing stock to the HID's and as you can see there is very little bleed out of light and I've never been flashed or had to adjust the lights. Most of the images have discriptive comments added
