Are Chevy Sonic and Chevy Spark keys interchangeable?

Hey Sonic friends,
My husband and I just bought him a used 2016 Chevy Spark from a Ford dealer this past weekend. We love the little car, but the dealer only gave us one key. That's not going to work, as we both drive it and I do all of the maintenance.

Being an LT1 trim, it has the same switchblade key as my '15 Sonic LT, and even has the same three buttons (lock/unlock/panic). I happen to have a blank key fob for the Sonic as well.

Chevy is quoting $60 just for the fob, before laser cutting and programming (I can do the programming at least)

Otherwise, I'll order a key fob from an aftermarket supplier. Strangely, some pair the Sonic and Spark together, and others quote less for the Sonics keys!

Call a local lock smith. They usually can program the keys, and should know. I'm fairly certain they are interchangeable, but don't want to be quoted on that. Also, you can get a key on ebay cheap. I think my second key, laser cutting, and the programming locally cost like $45 out the door.

Luckily, there’s no remote start on this Spark. Programming it seems extremely simple

I ended up ordering a key exclusively for the Spark online, only $37 including shipping. I didn’t want to risk going through the trouble with the Sonic blank and happen to find out it doesn’t work on the Spark. My Sonic’s key did slide into the Spark slot, but the transponder could be different. Who knows? Figured we may as well play safe.

Once we get the new Spark blank, we’ll go to a locksmith for cutting

We have the dupe made and complete.

An aftermarket key fob from carandtruckremotes.com cost $37 including shipping.

The local Chevy dealer laser cut the key for $25

And programming the key is so incredibly easy that a cross-eyed baby could do it.

So for about $60, a copy can be made. Good to know since our Sonics have similar keys. Sure beats the original $200 estimate from the dealer for everything
