Aug. 1 SoCal Sonic Owners Event: Rip-It-Up Rendezvous

Hey Guys!

LOVE that this event is still maintaining a buzz even weeks after its conclusion!

I just wanted to give you a guys a little event recap, as well as share some photos so that those of you who couldn't make it can see exactly what you missed out on :D

As you are all aware, the event took place at the Sonic restaurant in Duarte, CA on August 1st from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.

Our focus on this event was to immerse fellow Sonic owners and guests with new Sonic offerings, cool custom Sonics, and unique "Swag Packs" the owners could walk away with. We wanted to put on an event where Sonic owners could mingle with one another, have an awesome time, and walk away with some great items!

The custom Sonics we had on site consisted of the:
- SEMA 2011 Tjin Edition Sonic
- DSO Eyewear Sonic Sedan
- Sonic B-Spec Racer Concept
- Dragon Green Sonic Sedan Concept
- 2013 Sonic RS

Overall, we had a great time and the event was extremely positive! In total, we had 31 Sonic owners in attendance. Customers came from all over the Southern California area, but we even had several attendees from San Diego and Phoenix, Arizona. We learned a lot about Sonic enthusiasts, and walked away with some key findings that we can implement if we decide to have other events in the future! :banana:

We just want to thank all of you guys for the continued Sonic support and praise. If it weren't for members like you, this event wouldn't have been possible. You guys truly are the greatest!

Well I made the drive up. Traffic did suck from San Diego... Took the I-5 north (ARGH, took over an hour to get to Carlsbad, CA). To the 57 North to the 210? ... 2 hours and 45 min to go 130 miles. Due to the traffic and then the 80-85~ blasts when we had good traffic flow, I netted 27.3 mpg (whoops!).

When we got there, my BringGo navigation app. blew up again, with less than 2 miles to go. :eek:

Luckily I found another Sonic RS (Black) that was just ahead of me, and followed him to the event. With the Red RS that GM had on display, there were a total of 3 Sonic RS hatchbacks there (mine being one of them).

Not a lot of cars showed up, possibly 20-25 while I was there. Still it was cool, got the hat and t-shirt. :D

Filled the tank down the street and left before 9 pm to get home... 130 miles in 1 hour 50 minutes.... 35.4 mpg on the return trip driving no more than 5 mph over the speed limit on cruise. :banana:

NR552, Love the blacked out emblems and tails. :D

Did you have to dip the existing black parts of the tail so it would match, or just the chrome areas? Also, was it difficult to do the lettering?

I only did the chrome rings. They have a little blem on them, so will be redoing them possibly this weekend.

Plasti dip is easy. For the lettering, I just blocked off about a 1" area around the badges, put newspaper and blue tape to prevent overspray on the rest of the car. Shoot the area with 1 light coat, give it 10 min, then another coat, wait 10 min more... repeat that for about 6-7 coats. With the 4-5th coats I go a little heavy. Then give it 30 min to setup.

Peel away the tape, and you'll get to peel off the plasti dip off of your paint, it'll tear right at the badges. The rule of thumb is thicker is better, as it'll make removal easier.

On the tails I did the same thing then just rubbed the lens until I was able to pull off the plasti dip and it tore right @ the chrome trim ring.

When I do the lens again, I will put a piece of tape (pulled up into a loop to itself) on the lens first, so I can use that to pull up and remove the plasti dip on the lens (will save time).

I have done my chrome trim on the windows, and about to do the front fog trim as well.

Thanks for all the tips. I've never plasti-dipped before, but this sounds pretty easy with a little patience.

Very good event. Some months ago, we were the Chevrolet Sonic Club organized a similar event here in Brazil.

We live right next to Sam Boyd. lol would be cool to meet up after you were done! maybe get a few more locals to meet up
