Black Soot on stock RS exhaust tip

Hey everybody, I'm pretty new to the forums. I was posting today to see if any other RS owners have a problem with black soot like carbon buildup on the bottom of the exhaust tip. I was wondering if anybody possibly knows what kind of cleaner will get that off? I've tried 1 cleaner but it didn't really help at all. Someone else at my work also has an RS like mine but their exhaust tip looks perfectly clean so I don't know if mine is the only one or what. It just looks like crap with carbon all over it and I have a cars and coffee meet i'm going to in a week and I want it to look good. Thanks.

Mine has the black soot also. I haven't tried carb cleaner. Going to give it a try.

One car I had the exhaust tip was getting grimy looking so I cleaned it up with steel wool and wheel cleaner then hit it with some polishing compound on a rag. It was just an original equipment stainless steel tip but it shined up real nice.

Not sure I'd bother doing that again, I must not have had anything else going on that day, but it did look good.

Do not use carb/choke cleaner! It will destroy the paint, plastic, and other finishes.

I would recommend Barkeeper's Friend. Walmart carries it. It has multiple purposes. I would keep it away from the paint but short term exposure will not hurt. Rinse area thoroughly when done.

Makes me wonder, what is the soot? Unburnt hydrocarbons? The formula for gas combustion (2 C8H18 + 25 O2 → 16 CO2 + 18 H2O.) has no carbon but C02... so that soot represents inefficiencies or contaminants in the process...

When I said to carb a choke cleaner I mean spray it on the rag, and rub it on the tip to break the crude loose the whip it down. Not to spray it directly into the tip. The op was asking how to clean it up not how to polish it up.

Never Dull will clean it and also polish it.

WD40 and 000 gauge steel wool. I've used it for years on motorcycle chrome with no issues.

Tire paste works well. I used it on my 05 legacy

I get the same soot on my RS I just use Rim cleaning spray and it gets it off with little to no effort

Thanks guys. My dad ended up having some chrome polish lying around that he uses on his chrome 20" wheels on his 2013 Silverado and he recommended using an old toothbrush to scrub it off so I did and it came right off.
