Bought a 1.8 off FB marketplace and something is off?

Hello Chevy friends,

My nephew drove his Sonic through a big puddle (he didn’t think it was a big deal), and the engine ended up drinking a little too much water. Long story short, We had to replace it.

I found a guy on Facebook Marketplace selling a motor, and after some back-and-forth, I bought it. But when I went to install it, the intake was totally different. It looks like it belongs to a 1.6L engine. Now the FB guy is ghosting me, of course. Even though he said I had 60 day guarantee

I’m trying to find the VIN on this engine, but all I see is the engine number: LDE161335537. Did I get scammed with the wrong engine? Can I just swap block heads and make it work, or am I out of luck? Also, where can I check the engine part number to see what this engine actually came from?

Yeah buddy. You got a euro 1.6L ecotec for sure looks like a X16Xe1 cylinder head, but the engine has a 1.8B mark on the block so its confusing. But that intake for sure is a 1.6L ecotec intake manifold...honestly the block looks like a 1.8L block but the cylinder head is from a 1.6L like they swapped it...then sold it. My guess was an attempted project then got abandoned. I would source a 1.8L cylinder head then swap all the good bits from the old 1.8L and drop in the replacement engine. Don't forget to use the original ecu and just hook up everything like normal. If you use a donor E78 ecu...your gonna have a bad time as you gotta reconfigure it and upload the vin that matches the body control module to the transmission control module to the ecu and they have to match the original chassis or you will have a locked out ecu
