Coolant cap broken

So the coolant cap of my 2015 Chevrolet Sonic 1.6 LS broke off while the engine was still cold.
Is this a common occurrence? The only way to get the broken off piece out was to break it down
piece by piece because the o'ring of the cap was holding it in tightly.

Is there another way of removing this broken piece?

Just pry it out with a flathead. Same thing happened to me a couple months ago.

Just pry it out with a flathead. Same thing happened to me a couple months ago.

My mechanic removed it with a flathead, seems like the cap was not well-engineered in case of such a failure.
