Coolant mix water

Cant believe I’m asking this but does it matter what kind of water I use to mix with my coolant? Can I use regular tap water or do I have to use same type of water as for filling a battery or is that just for batteries you use a different type of water?

Have a leak at bottom of rad from the coolant temp sensor so I have to add some before taking it in to get fixed.

You must use distilled water.
You can use regular tap water but over time it will start to corrode your block.

Basically because regular tap water contains minerals, it allows electricity to conduct through it, due to your block being cast iron and your head and radiator being aluminium, electrolysis takes place.

This happens over many many months though. So if you just need to use it for a week or so, then tap water is fine as long as you do a flush afterwards and replace it with premix or use antifreeze mixed with distilled water.

You can actually use straight up distilled water if you aren't in a cold environment. Antifreeze doesnt raise the boiling temperature that much, the pressure of the system does.

Is this the same as “deionised” water?

The jug I bought said its deionized water good for radiators, batteries and such.
