For the 1.4L Sonic, Chevrolet Performance offers a cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust system. Both upgrade packages come with dealer-installed ECU calibration. You can have either or both, and GM will tune your ECU accordingly.
Insider info (I'm a Parts Manager for a Chevrolet dealership):
The ECU calibration does two things. First it flashes a mild fuel re-map to the ECU to allow extra fuel flow under high engine load and throttle settings to maintain proper air/fuel ratios and emissions. The fuel re-map is matched to your car's intake and/or exhaust upgrades through Chevrolet Performance. The second thing the calibration does is extend the timing for the turbo. It doesn't introduce extra boost (stock the car can produce up to 20psi), but it does cause the turbo to kick in at lower RPM.
On a personal note, I have installed both the Chevy exhaust and intake packages with tune. There is a noticeable difference in low to mid torque, and much more aggressive sound, and better mpg (before I put on wider tires I was getting up to 49mpg on the highway). Granted the Chevy tune isn't going to be nearly as potent as the aftermarket offers, but it's rock solid, warranty-friendly, GM approved, and you don't have to use any special fuel. GM estimates a 10 hp & 15 ft/lb increase with the exhaust package. Speaking with a Chevy Performance expert, I was told to expect similar gains with the intake w/tune. The two together should net about a 15 hp gain.
