Considering putting an intake on after i get a tune, but living in rural upstate new york, where roads and weather are less then ideal, i have multiple concerns. wondering if any one has experience with any of the concerns i have listed below.
- Water getting into intake from water splashing up under the hood, from rain, potholes, etc...
- snow that is being blown around entering the area where the intake is under the hood
- dust from driving dirt roads, getting pulled into the intake, i would assume the filter would help prevent this, but could it still be an issue ?
I wouldn't worry about the water from underneath, it is a pretty tough time for water to get up from under the car on that side, and what little water does make it up there is not going to be enough to most likely even get through the filter and cause any issues. Our intake with the shield there though will definitely prevent anything from getting in from underneath though.
When we were doing the initial testing on our intake, we were able to test it out in some driving snow, here are some pictures of what the intake looked like after driving in snow for a couple hours -

As you can see, even after driving in some heavy snow that coated the front of the car, very little if any actually got to the filter. This testing was actually done in upper New York state last year, FYI.
As for dust and dirt, just make sure that you are using a good quality aftermarket filter and keep it clean and you will not have a problem.
