Juke breaks timing chain

One of my friends bought a used 2012 Nissan Juke about 6 months back. A couple weeks ago he went to drive home from his horse farm and got what seemed to him like a "no spark", could not start the car. He fooled around with it for a while, driving around in my old F150 in the meantime, trying this or that fix. Finally he gave up and had it towed to our local mechanic buddies... to find that he had a broken timing chain which had eaten his engine.

As luck would have it, there was a recall for that very problem a month ago, so his whole repair is covered... which is good as they are swapping the entire engine, with a 2015 one, and no money out of pocket for him at all.

I asked him to get the bill anyway, since I'd love to see exactly what they charge for all that, although of course it isn't directly relevant to the Sonic.

Yep the 12 had a massive problem with timing chain failures. So far so good on my fiance's 13 nismo juke.

Chains can fail. GM has had issues in several of their engines with the chains letting loose early.

Anything mechanical always has the potential to fail. Chains are usually pretty low risk, though.

Not if improperly designed, constructed, or oiled though. Most high failure instances pertain to a design issue. Newer small engine chains more closely resemble a bicycle chain than a timing chain. the newer designs seem to suffer a higher risk of failure rate than the old proven designs.

Turns out it's a 2011 Juke. Anyway, I drove him over to pick it up a few days ago, and indeed it was 100% no cost to him. They swapped the engine and a pile of other parts including the turbocharger, said the cost to them for the parts would have been 9500 if it wasn't all paid for... they didn't say what the cost of labor would have been.
