Not In Love With My Sonic...

Hi all, I'm kinda falling out of love with my car and I'm looking for some feedback...

First off, I'm 20 years old, I'll be 21 in 5 months.
My first car I bought in the summer of 2010, a 2000 2door cavalier, green with gold flake paint and a sun roof, and I love(d) that car until I was rear-ended...

I needed a car to get to school, 60 miles away, and I needed one quick. Although I found a great 2009 5speed 2door Cobalt, essentially a modern cavalier, my dad, who has a tendency to be hypocritical and selfish, shied away from buying a used car because of the unknown issues it may have and develop. Although my 1st car was obviously used, all of a sudden he got on this "you're not buying, and I'm not cosigning for, a used car" kick, and tried to push me into everything from ricey fortes to a USED Ford Escort... Eventually I got tired of this and needing a car, gave in, ending up in my Sonic.

This car is great for what it is, besides have a bad battery within 2 weeks of ownership, needing new sway bar bushings within 4,000 miles, among other issues..

The problem I'm having is I want something sporty-ier. I'm still young and I would like to enjoy it, but my dad is being controlling and won't let me sell this car and get something, no matter how nice, USED, even though he has tried to get ME to buy a Used Jeep for a second car...

I'd love to trade in my 6speed auto Sonic for something Manual in good condition, with only 2 doors... Don't get me wrong, I appreciate my dad cosigning for me and having a new car, although he jacked up the price by $1,000 by not cosigning for my car unless it was automatic..
I would just like to hear your reactions to this situation...

I am in the same spot as you man. 16 and parents bought me a Sonic. I actually really like it though. I am very grateful to have it for my first car. Yes I want a brand new WRX, but I am also only 16. My Sonic is fun to drive as I am modding it with my money.

As someone that drove Cavaliers from 2001 through February 2012, the Sonic is not a bad car. Its not as quick as a Z24 (what my Cavaliers were), but it isnt a slouch. I have learned how to flick the car around corners and have a lot of fun driving it. With a good suspension upgrade it will be even more fun to toss around. The car can be made sportier than it is.

I want a 2door Manual... I hate having 2 extra doors hanging off the back and not being able to shift my own gears...

I wish i got a new car when i was 16. My parents didnt let me get a car till I had a full time job. I think i was almost 18. Then i had to buy my own car.

go buy a bike, I'm 21, bought my sonic myself and have it for a daily, I have a 07gsxr 750 for when I need a little more. get a bike and take it to the track, it'll make a man out of you haha.

I agree with eric if you can sell it and eat the difference if your not happy with it. you may start having some bad habbits if you don't care for your care. sell it. get a coupe and have fun. but if you don't love the car your in..... than whats the point?

For a little perspective, you're much better off than I was at your age. Not only did my parents not help me get a vehicle, they somewhat even made it harder for me to get one on my own.

If can, do like the other guys said and find your way into a 1.4L. Drives well!

Spoiled ass kids today. I'm not much older than you, but I've never had a car bought for or given to me. I guess that's why I appreciate my things. If you don't like the control you dad has over you then you should've been a grown up and done your own thing. Just cut the umbilical cord and be a free bird, if not, be grateful for the things you have and curb the Desire for the things YOU WANT!

In my 30s and I've always had to buy and save for whatever I get. I'd take just about any sonic at this point. Maybe a few customizations and you'll like the car more.

The way the op worded it makes it sound like he's paying for the car himself but also makes it seem like he isn't.

If you're paying for it but your father is co-signing then it's his rules not yours. You wouldn't be able to purchase anything requiring a loan without his assistance. It's his credit on the line mainly so he's not gonna allow you to buy a used POS.

If you had a substantial chunk of cash saved up and are able to pay for the insurance on your own then you should've bought something used you can afford. That chunk of cash also cannot be the insurance check from your other vehicle if that vehicle was purchased by mom and dad. If that's the case then again it's their rules.

Other than that idk. If it was me I'd be happy I have a brand new car with a warranty and not complain.
